One of the biggest barriers for a person experiencing homelessness is income. How can you pay rent and utilities, shop for groceries and live life without a sustainable income?
That's why Harmony House created the Jobs First, a grant-funded program that launched in 2013. The program focuses on helping clients find and secure employment in the Tri-State, by focusing services on mock interviews, resume writing, online application assistsance, interview attire, bus passes, job coaching and uniform assitance (once hired).
The team averages 10 to 15 placements each month, with clients working in such fields as hospitality, health care, retail, call center, customer service, construction, roofing and food service.
To date, the team has placed more than 650 clients into local jobs.
In 2016, grant funding allowed them to start providing gift cards when clients reached 30- and 90-day employment milestones.
Grant funding also has been awarded for the third straight year from the McDonough Foundation to purchase footwear required for certain jobs.
And the donor-supported Jeremiah Fund helps purchase shirts and pants for clients when they get hired.
